PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA OF THE AMERICAS 2nd YOUNG COMPOSERS COMPETITION 2008

The Philharmonic Orchestra of the Americas (POA) is proud to announce its Second Young Composers Competition.  The purpose of POA’s Young Composers Competition is to encourage the creation and performance of new works by composers from the American continent.

ELIGIBILITY
POA’s Young Composers Competition is open to composers from South America, Central America, North America and the Caribbean, under 35 years of age by the time the application is submitted.

CRITERIA
The work should be an original composition never before performed.
See "Guidelines" below for more on style and instrumentation.

PRIZES
First Prize Winner will receive:
- The opportunity to have his/her piece performed in New York City in the fall of the 2008-09 season with the orchestra
- $4,000.00 prize
- A round trip ticket to New York City to attend the premiere of the composition
- Three night stay at a hotel in Manhattan
- A non-commercial recording of his/her piece

JUDGES
Submitted scores will be reviewed by an international panel that includes conductors, composers, principal players and orchestra educators. The chair of the 2nd POA Young Composers Competition jury is Richard Danielpour.  ALL APPLICATIONS WILL BE ANONYMOUS TO THE PANEL OF JUDGES.  The panel’s decision is final.

GUIDELINES
Instrumentation& Presentation
Limit 2/2/2/2 - 4/3/3/1 – timpani + 2 percussionists, hp, pf, and strings. All instruments must be printed on the score in the key of C
(Harp, percussion and piano may be optional)
No choral selections please.
- Second players may double in the following instruments:
- Second flute to piccolo
- Second clarinet to bass clarinet
- Second oboe to English horn
- Second bassoon to contrabassoon

Duration
Work must be between eight (8) and twelve (12) minutes in duration.

Limits
A composer may only submit one work.  The composition must not have been performed publicly, published, or awarded a prize in a previous competition.

Application Fee
The application fee is $20 USD (non-refundable)

Submission Requirements
Applicants should submit:
- An application Form – (not given to the panel of judges)
- A clean, easy-to-read copy of the full score, the name of the composer should not be in the score)
- A demo recording (if available)
- A short biography (not given to the panel of judges)
- 2 photocopies of your passport to prove nationality (not given to the panel of judges)
- 20 USD application fee in the form of a check, cash or money order made out to: Philharmonic Orchestra of the Americas
Applications may not be submitted via email

Notification of Winning Composition(s)
A decision will be made by mid-June.  The performance will take place in the fall of the 2008-09 POA season, (venue and date to be announced)   Payment of awards will be made by POA at the concert, contingent upon the submission of required documents and performance materials.

Presentation Score
The winning composer(s) will assume full responsibility for providing adequate performance materials. The winning composer(s) should provide to POA, a presentation score and a set of performance parts of the winning composition (one for each instrument). All submitted performance materials must be fully legible and playable from the submitted parts.

COPYRIGHT AND ACKNOWLEDGMENT
The winning composer(s) retain full rights to his or her work with the understanding that he or she will grant POA a non-exclusive right to perform and record the composition solely for non-commercial, POA-related activities. A copy of all submitted scores will remain with POA.  Submitted scores will not be returned to applicants.

The winning composer(s) will warrant to POA that the composition does not violate any existing copyright in whole or in part, and that he/she has lawful right to the composition. If the composer has any arrangement with any performing rights organizations, such as ASCAP, BMI, SESAC, SOCAN, and the like, the composer is required to instruct the affiliated organization not to collect performance fees or royalties solely where POA is involved.

Compositions that do not win a prize will remain the sole property of the composer. However, POA will retain submitted scores. Composers of non-winning works will be contacted for permission prior to any performance or recording by POA. In the event of future publication of winning compositions, POA would require printed acknowledgment of the award on the music. This acknowledgment should be in the following form:
